What is VIM?

VIM (Video In Motion) is a software modification that allows video playback to continue while the vehicle is moving. By default, the MMI system disables the video display once the vehicle exceeds a certain speed. You can still hear the audio, such as music or voice, but the video screen is disabled. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the video display becomes available again.

This modification removes the standard video playback restriction and allows supported video content to remain visible while driving.

VIM can be available on various infotainment systems used across the Volkswagen Group, including Audi, Volkswagen, Škoda, and SEAT/CUPRA. However, VIM availability depends on the specific head unit, hardware version, firmware, and infotainment platform. Therefore, the vehicle model alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

Audi MMI

Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) is Audi's central infotainment system, designed to control a wide range of vehicle functions including multimedia, navigation, audio, telephone connectivity, and other convenience features.

Audi has introduced several generations of MMI, including MMI 2G, MMI 3G, MMI 3G Plus, MIB, MIB2, and MIB3. Each generation offers different hardware, software, multimedia capabilities, and coding options.

Depending on the MMI generation and hardware, features such as Video In Motion (VIM) may be enabled or modified through coding, adaptation, firmware modification, or specialized tools. For example, certain MMI 3G systems can be configured using diagnostic coding/adaptation, while some MIB/MIB2 systems may require different methods depending on the specific unit and software version.

VIM on Volkswagen, Škoda and SEAT

VIM is not exclusive to Audi. Similar functionality can be found on various Volkswagen, Škoda, and SEAT/CUPRA infotainment systems based on the MIB platform.

Common systems that may support VIM include:

• Volkswagen: Composition Media, Discover Media, Discover Pro
• Škoda: Bolero, Amundsen, Columbus
• SEAT/CUPRA: Media System, Navi System, Navi System Plus
• Audi: MMI 3G, MIB, MIB2, and selected MIB3 systems

Compatibility varies significantly between different hardware and software versions. For this reason, the head unit part number, software train, firmware version, and hardware type should be checked before attempting any VIM activation.
