DTCs, commonly known as OBD2 fault codes, are system messages stored in the ECU when a malfunction or abnormal condition is detected. These codes help technicians identify the source of a problem and alert the driver via dashboard warning lights—most commonly the Check Engine Light (MIL).
DTCs are essential for diagnosing real mechanical or electronic faults.
However, in many cases, ECU tuning or hardware modifications can trigger unnecessary fault codes—even when the engine operates perfectly.
Now, for a complete understanding of these error codes, let us use an example. Consider the following error code:
P0300 : The example error code above is a common error in cars, referring to “misfire in one or multiple cylinders.”
Yes — but only when performed correctly and selectively.
DTC deactivation is safe only if the fault code is related to a component that has been intentionally removed or modified.
Common Examples:
In these cases, disabling the related fault codes is both safe and necessary.
⚠️ Important Notice
Each DTC follows a standardized format that identifies the affected system:
P-Codes (Powertrain): Engine, transmission, emissions
C-Codes (Chassis): ABS, steering, stability control
B-Codes (Body): Airbag, climate, comfort modules
U-Codes (Network): CAN Bus communication errors
Second digit:
0 = Generic (global standard)
1 = Manufacturer-specific
Remaining digits define the subsystem:
1xxx – Air & fuel measurement
2xxx – Injector circuits
3xxx – Ignition & misfire
4xxx – Emissions control (EGR, DPF, CAT)
5xxx – Idle & speed control
6xxx – ECU internal & outputs
7xxx / 8xxx / 9xxx – Transmission
A/B/Cxxx – Hybrid & advanced drivetrain systems
DTC OFF involves modifying specific ECU maps to permanently deactivate the fault detection logic for the selected code(s).
Safe DTC Removal Scenarios:
DPF Delete: Disable particulate filter fault codes
EGR Delete: Disable EGR flow & circuit DTCs
Lambda / CAT Delete: Disable rear O2 sensor & catalyst efficiency codes
Swirl Flap Delete: Disable intake flap actuator fault codes
Result:
When performed by a professional ECU tuner, DTC OFF is engine-safe and does not affect long-term reliability.
At AutoExplain, we provide full DTC OFF support across all major ECU systems:
P-Codes: Engine, fuel, emissions, transmission
C-Codes: ABS, suspension, traction control
B-Codes: Airbag, body electronics, comfort modules
